HEY
GRAVITY! is the new project of singer and chanteuse JUSTINE
BERRY, previously front-person of celebrated UK garage rockers
M.A.S.S – losing none of the energy of that previous band, but wanting to
spread things a bit more evenly between the girls and boys, she
has teamed up with guitarist and side-kick ANNA HALL and a couple
of her ex-M.A.S.S. compadres, to form HEY GRAVITY!, keeping the
lineage going by being named after one of her previous bands most
noted songs.
Recording their debut album has been an epic journey for HEY
GRAVITY! but now after nearly two years in the making they
are about to
unleash ‘RISEN’ a debut that fulfils all of the potential
displayed in their blistering live shows. Two girls and three boys,
about to win hearts and minds.
Recording sessions for the album began in 2005 in San Francisco
with producer Jeff Saltzman (The Killers ‘Hot Fuss’,
The Sounds etc.), keeping artistic control over every aspect of
the music by financing the project themselves. Completing the album
to a sound and consistency that Justine and the gang felt fulfilled
the full potential of the songs, has taken some time, blood, sweat
and tears but finally a Knight in shining armour appeared in the
shape of David Rousseau ( Dad Records) in France. After hearing
the unfinished tapes he demanded that he should become Executive
Producer and help complete the album, finally enlisting the talents
of mixing team The Macchiato Kids (Mark Plati and Tom Mckay) ensuring
that all the songs reached their potential… they have… and
more.
JUSTINE was first spotted by BBC Radio One in the UK, with
her band M.A.S.S. being the first band chosen to launch
OneMusic, Radio One’s new music initiative and yes,
it was the debut track ‘Hey
Gravity’ chosen by DJs, Jo Whiley, Steve Lamacq and
others to launch the project. M.A.S.S. were also one of
the last band to be championed
by legendary UK DJ John Peel and ‘Hey Gravity’ ended
the year in the Top 5 of his annual Festive 50. It is partly
in respect to
John Peel that the band chose ‘Hey Gravity’ as
the name for the new project, and Justine also wrote her
song ‘Perfumed
Garden’ in tribute to him.
Now the only way is up - The debut HEY GRAVITY! album ‘RISEN’ has
just been released in France (FEB ’07) and while discussions
with labels continue for a other European / US releases, the impact
in France has been instantaneous with the band playing sold-out
shows in Paris, already showing at No.12 in the French national
airplay charts and appearances on some of the biggest national
music TV shows such as Taratata (www.taratata.net )
In 2006 Hey Gravity were chosen to be part of the first British
Music Week in Berlin and are happy to be returning for the
2007 event in Köln.
